Sennheiser CX 300-II Precision Black

Recently, I went to Media Markt in West End Mall and bought a Sennheiser CX 300-II Precision Black for my Apple iPhone 3GS. This is my simple personal review about this pair of earphones. I’m not an expert in these things. I just hope it could help you with how to decide when getting your own earphones.

Okay, for some background first. I bought a new pair of earphones because my favorite Philips earphones just keeps on breaking down on me. It never lasts a year for me. First, I bought the Philips SHE 7750 (with the extension cord). After half a year, the rubber sealing the earphones and producing the nice bass expanded/stretched and fell off. So I bought another Philips SHE 7750. Again, the rubber seal fell off. When I got to Budapest, Hungary, I bought the Philips SHE 7850. This one has in-line volume control. I was very happy with it already when the rubber again fell off after seven months. I couldn’t find it anywhere.

The reason I buy Philips earphones is because of the frequency range, 8Hz – 24,000Hz. I’m a bass person (I also play bass guitar in my band, Vodka Cherry) and I like the bass range of Philips.

At first I was hesitant in buying Sennheiser because I saw another Philips with the better frequency range. But I decided I’m fed up with the rubber problems of Philips. Now I was also
thinking of buying AKG K330. They are of the same price as the Sennheiser. But a colleague of mine has AKG and I wasn’t impressed with it.

Now let’s proceed with the Sennheiser CX 300-II. The reason I bought an IEM or In-Ear Monitor earphones is for its improved and consistent sound quality. So I was told.

Getting the right sound and feel
The package comes with two extra ear adapter sets (small and large). The medium is already with the earphones.

Nobody. Yes, nobody I know has told or advised me anything about getting the right fit for these IEMs. Usually, people don’t care about these adapters. And when they don’t hear the bass they will say the sound is not balanced. Okay now I am telling you, make sure that you get the right “fit” with the adapters so it will create a vacuum in your ears and produce the best sound.

The medium adapters are just the right size for my ears but the large adapters are better for me. How/Why? One, the large adapters easily create a vacuum in my ears because of its size. Second, I don’t have to push the earphones deep in the ear to have the vacuum effect. So my ears don’t hurt. Third, the space/vacuum that the large adapters make in my ear produces a fuller bass sound.

Aside from the physical fit, you also need to test the sound fit. Thus, spend time to try all the adapters sizes to see which ones will produce the right sound for you. As a bass person, the large adapter produces the best bass for me.

Bass
A lot of people has said that the Sennheiser CX 300-II does not produce the best bass. Well, yes in a way. Comparing it to my old Philips, the Sennheiser doesn’t have the same heavy bass. But of course, best bass differs in every person. Some like the bombastic bass but some like the smooth bass. I used to be the bombastic bass person. Now with Sennheiser, I have appreciated the smooth bass.

Usually I’m curious why in some of my MP3s I don’t hear the mid-bass. Sennheiser CX 300-II was able to highlight the mid-bass in my MP3s. I am able to hear bass that I couldn’t hear in my Philips earphones (That might be the problem with a very wide frequency range, you tend to lose some sounds in the middle.)

Highlighted background sounds
I already mentioned this earlier with the mid-bass. With the Sennheiser CX 300-II, I could hear sounds and instruments that I never heard before when using my Philips earphones. The frequency range of Sennheiser CX 300-II is just enough to highlight some of the sounds we usually miss. I could hear the snapping of fingers, the sliding of the fingers in acoustic guitars, etc.

Noise isolation
This is not your noise canceling earphones. That’s a different story. What the Sennheiser CX 300-II simply does is isolate the noise around you that you get to hear the music better. When I’m taking the tram or the subway, it really isolates the noise and I could just hear my music.

Complaints
I have complaints though. Sometimes I could hear my footfall. When the music is transitioning to the next song, I could hear my footfall. I could also hear the wires when they rub against my clothes. Oh yeah, I could slightly hear myself chewing gum. I guess that’s how it really is with IEM (In-Ear Monitor) earphones. Because of the vacuum effect, you could hear these things.

Overall
Overall, the Sennheiser CX 300-II has impressed me. I have the bass that I want. It isolates the noise of the tram and subway. My iPhone is very happy with it, they are both black. I don’t think I’ll be going back to Philips for a while.

Happy Birthday Natalia! I Miss you!

I’m out of the hospital now. I had an operation here in Budapest, Hungary. My gall bladder was removed.

I’m very blessed to have great colleagues and new friends in Budapest who really took care of me. It was a challenge to be in a hospital miles away from your family. Thank you for all the support and prayers.

[PSP] Tutorial – How to properly install PSPRadio v1.18.1400 to CFW 4.01 M33-x

This is a step-by-step guide to installing PSPRadio to your CFW. I encountered some problems so I’ll be pointing these out later.

Requirements:

PSPRadio v1.18.1400 – You can download it here
Slim Sony PSP Custom FirmWare (CFW) by Dark-Alex – I’m using 4.01 M33-2 but I heard some people were able to make it run on 3.80 M33-x. And originally, I think this was meant for Fat Sony PSP 1.50 but I don’t know anyone who has this so I can’t confirm it.
Wireless network (Wifi) – Make sure your PSP Wifi connection is setup properly. You need to connect to the internet to stream music from Shoutcast.

Procedure:

Connect your PSP to your computer via USB
Go to Settings
Select USB Connection
Once connected, you can proceed with the PSPRadio files
Extract the RAR file (PSP_Radio_v1.18.1400.rar) on your computer
Inside the PSP_Radio_v1.18.1400 folder, you will see the following:

PSP
PSP_Radio_PLB.zip

PSP_Radio_PLB.zip is the playlist maker for PSPRadio. I can’t seem to make this run. No worries. For the meantime, we’re focusing on the PSPRadio itself.
Go inside the PSP folder and you will see the following:

GAME371
Go inside the GAME371 folder and you will see the following:

PSPRadio
Copy the PSPRadio folder to your PSP in the following directory:

PSP\GAME150
In your PSP, this is how it should look like:

PSP\GAME150\PSPRadio

When I first installed PSPRadio, I encountered a folder error. In the RAR file PSPRadio resided under folder PSP\GAME371. I noticed that folder GAME371 did not exist in the PSP folder. So I created the folder GAME371 and copied the PSPRadio folder under it just like the RAR directory structure. However, I couldn’t find PSPRadio under the Game > Memory Stick menu. And when I moved the PSPRadio folder into GAME150, I could see it. Just take note of this.
Once done, you can disconnect your PSP from your computer
In your PSP, go to Game
Select Memory Stick
Select PSPRadio
It should start up and try to connect to your wifi. However, when I first ran PSPRadio, I encountered an error. It said:

Error Starting Network

And when I checked the error log (PSPRadio.log) I saw this:

ERROR – WLANConnectionHandler : sceNetApctlConnect returned ’0×80110601′

This simply means it cannot connect via wifi and you need to check your settings.
To check your settings, click on the Start button
In the WiFi setting, you should choose your wifi connection name. If you don’t see your wifi connection name and instead you see this:

WiFi: Off ♪≡i♂

Then you need to delete your wifi connection settings and create a new one. I don’t know why this happens but this means PSPRadio can’t read your existing wifi connection.
Once you’ve recreated your wifi connection, try running PSPRadio again. This time, it should automatically detect your wifi connection.
Just use the Triangle (▲) button to navigate between pages and select your radio station. Use the X button to play and the Square (■) button to stop.
I tried creating playlists with the included playlist maker (PSP_Radio_PLB) but it had some errors. I explored using Winamp playlists and it produced the same playlist format (PLS). I simply uploaded the playlist in the Playlists folder inside PSPRadio.

Downgrading iPod Nano 3G from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2 Firmware due to Crashes/Resets

Background:
My iPod Nano 3G had some problems with its clickwheel. I can’t seem to adjust the volume or the clickwheel sometimes simply refuses to work.

I checked on some forums and saw that other people had similar problems. Their clickwheel also stopped working after a few months or so. Mine lasted for 10 months before I encountered this problem.

Some people suggested the common “reseting” of the iPod. This involved holding down the center button and the top button for around 3-5 seconds. But this didn’t help.

Someone also suggested that when you turn on and off the hold switch, the clickwheel adjusts itself so don’t hold it for 3-5 seconds. Still this didn’t help.

My last resort was to bring it to Digital Walker in Greenhills because it was still in warranty. Unfortunately, they told me something was wrong with their connection to the Apple Service Center and I had to wait for two weeks to find out if my iPod Nano 3G needs replacement. Then I still have to wait for another two weeks for the actual replacement.

I felt I needed a second opinion. And since my warranty was covered in all Apple Service Centers, I brought it to Power Mac Center in Megamall. I was impressed with the following:

They immediately told me that it was up for replacement.
They asked permission to delete everything. They said it was for my security to protect my invested contents. Nice!
They will give me a text message to inform me if the replacement iPod arrives in two weeks. At least this time I was informed immediately that my iPod will be replaced.

To my surprise, I got a text message after 6 days from Power Mac Center informing me that my replacement iPod Nano 3G can now be claimed. 6 Days?!!! Wow! I’m impressed with Power Mac Center!

However, I don’t know if it was a good thing or not but my new iPod came with 1.1.3 firmware. Usually it was supposed to be a good thing to have the latest firmware. Unfortunately, I noticed that my new iPod would crash or reset whenever I browsed through the Cover Flow or any of the Playlists. Good thing this didn’t happen for Videos and Photos.

I looked around forums and saw people complaining about the 1.1.3 firmware as well.

Now this made me want to try “downgrading” my iPod from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2. The process might be simple but it worked.

Downgrading from 1.1.3 to 1.1.2 firmware:

*Warning: Please follow the instructions properly. Do these at your own risk.

This is a simple step-by-step guide to downgrading your iPod Nano 3G Firmware. I hope this tutorial will help you safely downgrade your iPod. But please remember that there is a risk of voiding your warranty.

Procedure:

You need your old 1.1.2 firmware. You can check if you still have it by going to your User Folder.

For Windows XP, you can usually find it in: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\

If you don’t have a copy of your old 1.1.2 firmware, you can get it from this link shared by one of the Apple forum members.
Remove or move to another location any other existing files and firmwares and leave two files:
- iPod_26.1.1.2.ipsw
- iPod_26.1.1.2.ipsw.signature
Turn off your internet connection. This prevents the automatic update of iTunes.
Just to make sure it looks for the 1.1.2 firmware, restart your iTunes.
Click on Restore. Now with the internet connection gone, it will prompt you if you want to use the old 1.1.2 firmware.
Proceed with the restoration and wait for it to finish.

There you have it you now have a downgraded iPod Nano 3G.

For me, I don’t really use iTunes for syncing music. I use Winamp (+ml_ipod). But that’s another story. Perhaps I’ll make another post about using Winamp (+ml_ipod) as an alternative to iTunes. The only reason I installed iTunes was to downgrade my iPod.

Ateneo Alma Mater Song – 2008 Bonfire

Last September 30, 2008, the Ateneo community held a bonfire for the following achievements:
Loyola Schools: UAAP Season 71 Mens’ Basketball Champion and Ladies’ Swimming Champion
High School: UAAP Season 71 Juniors Basketball Champion and Swimming Champion
Grade School: Small Basketeers of the Philippines Champion

Details of the event:
6:00 PM: Thanksgiving Mass at the Church of the Gesu
7:30 PM: Program at Bellarmine Field (across the Gesu)

Performances by the Blue Babble Battalion, Migs Escueta, APO Hiking Society, Chicosci, Kjwan, Parokya ni Edgar, Spongecola, and other bands.

The traffic started all the way from Corinthian Gardens. When we arrived Ateneo through the Grade School gate, one of the guards informed us that there was no available parking anymore. Fortunately, another guard informed us that they’ll be opening some areas for parking. We eventually parked beside the Henry Lee Irwin Theater and just walked towards Bellarmine field.

It was great to see former classmates and teachers. I also noticed a lot of “senior” classes like Class of ’77 and Class of ’86 the Freedom Batch. Due to the numerous achievements of the various teams, a lot of Ateneo Alumni had really turned up. It also helped that the following day was a holiday.

What we just hated was the effect of the rain earlier that afternoon. It made Bellarmine field all muddy. Our shoes got stuck and it was hard to go walking inside the field. Eventually people just opted to stand around the field which made the traffic more congested. hehehe!

The bonfire was hosted by Wesley Gonzales and Lia Cruz. The players got to thank their supporters. And several of them even promoted some companies. Jai Reyes even mentioned something like Toni and Guy Salon for his hair. Chris Tiu mentioned something like Chunky Chicken. It was really noisy around the field and we didn’t understand some of the things they said.

Before the bonfire was lit, the players were called up the stage. The Mens’ Basketball team consisted of the following: Bacon Austria, Chris Tiu, Eric Salamat, Jai Reyes, Jobe Nkemakolam, Justin Chua, Kirk Long, Mike Baldos, Nico Salva, Nonoy Baclao, Oping Sumalinog, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Ryan Buenafe, Tonino Gonzaga, Vince Burke, Yuri Escueta. Everyone cheered loudly as each of them took the stage. Then they all went down and proceeded to light the bonfire. When the bonfire was lit, the Alma Mater Song began. And afterwards, Spongecola started the partying.

Overall, it was an event that everyone will always remember. And I’m very glad I was able to attend it before I left the country for good.

The Ateneo community celebrates mass after winning the 2008 UAAP Senior Men’s Basketball Championship.

It just happened that I was in the Ateneo Grade School celebrating with my former teachers the Fair of the Guardian Angels. We just waited for the basketball players to arrive at the Church of the Gesu for the mass.

Sorry I didn’t get to video the start of the song itself. I almost did not get to take the video. I was already raising my own arm. hehehe! But for the sake of remembrance since I’m migrating to Europe, I opted to take the video. From Grade School to High School to College, the song still brings great emotions.

Last January I searched for the music that was used in the Seoul, South Korea’s tourism commercial. My initial search landed me at the youtube version.

Later on that week, I found Aal’s website in multiply, http://alizai.multiply.com. He had the mp3 on his site. I couldn’t download it so I contacted him. He was kind enough to share the mp3 with me. Thus, in return I’m also sharing the mp3 with you.

Pioneer TS-S15 and a DIY High-pass Filter

For other countries, it’s called Pioneer TS-T15. They have the same features.

A few months ago I bought a Pioneer TS-S15 tweeters for my car. However, it didn’t have any crossovers and high-pass filters with it. So I had to improvise. I need to create my own high-pass filter. It’s quite simple actually. You just need a non-polar capacitor of the right micro farad and you would have your do-it-yourself high-pass filter.

Now, I’ve been looking all over the internet for the right capacitor value for my car tweeters. As I was surfing, I came across this site: Car Audio – Speaker Crossover Chart

After purchasing a 4.7 uf non-polar capacitor, I went over to my car dealer and had it installed.

The tweeters improved my car audio quite impressively. Those who rode in my car were impressed with the overall quality of the sound. The tweeters added more detail to the music. The bass gave a lot of car shaking without the pain in your chest. But that’s another story. hehe!
